Faculty Spotlight: Carlin Long, MD
“Patients tell doctors things that they don’t tell anybody – not their priest, their minister, their wives or their kids,” said Dr. Carlin Long. “That intimacy is really why I went into medicine.”
Faculty Spotlight: Anu Agarwal, MD
For Dr. Anu Agarwal, adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) is personal. When she was 11, her younger brother passed out because of a faulty heart valve which restricted efficient blood flow. “My brother was found to have a very tight valve, and they had to do a catheter procedure to open up that valve,” said Dr. Agarwal, now an ACHD specialist. “That just fascinated me, and made me want to become a doctor.”
Fellow Spotlight: Pooja Sethi, MD
Dr. Pooja Sethi grew up in New Delhi, India, and earned her medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, India.
Fellow Spotlight: Calvin Kwong, MD
Dr. Calvin Kwong was born and raised in San Francisco, where he attended Lick-Wilmerding High School. From an early age, he enjoyed biology and chemistry, and thought medicine would be an enjoyable way to directly help people.
Fellow Spotlight: Teresa Wang, MD
Dr. Teresa Wang was born in West Lafayette, Ind., grew up in Charlotte, N.C., and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C.
Fellow Spotlight: Alexandra Teng, MD
Dr. Alexandra “Jay” Teng hails from Berkeley, and graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s degree in history and science.
Fellow Spotlight: Benjamin Kelemen, MD
Dr. Benjamin Kelemen grew up in Ann Arbor, Mich. A gifted violinist, he performed at Carnegie Hall with the Columbia Chamber Players during college.
Fellow Spotlight: Sunil P. Singh, MD
Dr. Sunil P. Singh was born in Manhattan and grew up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. His uncle, an interventional cardiologist, brought him to a cardiac catheterization lab when he was 18 years old.
Fellow Spotlight: Beixin Julie He, MD
Dr. Beixin Julie He was born in China and grew up in Wisconsin. While earning her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she developed a fascination with the heart. “It beats spontaneously, and is a symbol of life,” she said.
Fellow Spotlight: Alexios Hadjis, MD
Dr. Alexios Hadjis was born and raised in Montreal. Although he grew up in a family of lawyers, a cousin who is a cardiac electrophysiologist inspired him to pursue the same subspecialty.
