Fellow Spotlight: Evelyn Song, MD
Evelyn Song, MD, was born in Anhui Province in China. In the 1950s, her grandfather taught himself traditional Chinese medicine, becoming the only health care provider in his village –inspiring her own calling as a doctor.
At age 11, Dr. Song moved with her family to Madison, Wis. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her medical degree from Penn State Hershey College of Medicine, and spent a year as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Research Fellow working in the lab of cancer biologist Scott A. Armstrong, MD, PhD at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She completed internal medicine residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, then spent a year at UCSF as an advanced heart failure hospitalist.
As a fellow, she appreciates how invested all the attendings are in teaching trainees. Dr. Song is passionate about medical education, and has held leadership roles with CardioNerds, which seeks to democratize cardiovascular education. “It’s rewarding to see people grow, and I hope to continue to inspire new trainees,” she said.
She plans to pursue further training in advanced heart failure and cardio-oncology, continue her work in medical education, and care for diverse populations, especially Mandarin-speaking patients. Dr. Song is married to Eugene Sun, a software engineer. Together they enjoy hiking with their dogs, exploring new restaurants, and traveling.
