Fellow Spotlight: Abhishek Singh, MD

Born in India, Dr. Abhishek Singh grew up in Scotland, Arizona and New Jersey. He majored in chemistry and biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Singh then received his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, where he also earned his PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology. For his doctorate, he researched protein folding, specifically tropomyosin and its role in the regulation of muscle contraction. Dr. Singh completed his residency at UCSF.

As a lifelong athlete, he always understood the importance of cardiovascular health, a background which contributed to his interest in cardiology. “From the moment you are born to the moment you pass away, your heart continuously pumps blood,” he said. “Any dysfunction and it can have severe complications.” He also was drawn to the mathematical, logical aspect of cardiology.

Dr. Singh is particularly interested in doing research and providing care for patients with advanced heart failure. “There are a lot of opportunities for research there, and there is a lot we don’t understand,” he said. “We don’t understand the mechanisms for reversing disease, which is something that interests me, including developing novel therapeutics to help regain function – whether it is regenerative, or augmenting cardiac function with medications. It’s a great field.”

In his spare time, Dr. Singh enjoys playing soccer and basketball, and eating spicy food.
