Fellow Spotlight: Kimberly Yan, MD
Kimberly (Kim) Yan, MD, grew up in San Francisco and earned her bachelor’s degree in nutritional sciences from UC Berkeley, where she studied body fat and cardiometabolic disease. During college, she had a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured cerebellopontine cavernous malformation. “That experience inspired me to not only pursue research that empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health, but also to be my patients’ advocate in receiving the best possible care,” she said.
She contributed to research at the UCSF Center for Cerebrovascular Research before earning her medical degree at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. There, she conducted clinical research on thyroid cancer, malignancy in adult congenital heart disease patients, and how sex-specific body composition impacts mortality in coronary artery disease patients.
Dr. Yan completed her internal medicine residency at UCSF, where she studied remote monitoring in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices. She plans to become a general cardiologist with a focus on prevention and women’s heart health. She enjoys yoga, running, and baking.
