Fellow Spotlight: Hannah Bernstein, MD
Growing up in Washington, D.C., Hannah Bernstein, MD, MPH, was a Star Trek fan, fueling a love of science. She completed her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from New York University and was a research coordinator for the Center for Musculoskeletal Care at NYU. She earned her medical degree and MPH from Tulane University, volunteering at Grace House, a student-run clinic at a women’s substance-use treatment program. She also completed an aerospace medicine clerkship at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, investigating which antibiotics would be most critical to have on board future missions to Mars. She then completed her internal medicine residency and chief residency at UC Davis, where she contributed to research on atrial fibrillation in patients with COVID-19 as well as congenital heart disease, and the use of noninvasive stereotactic radiation for refractory ventricular tachycardia.
She was drawn to UCSF because of its unparalleled research opportunities, commitment to addressing health disparities, and broad clinical enterprise. “The amount of learning I’ve done and breadth of pathology I’ve seen just in the first few weeks has been a huge highlight,” said Dr. Bernstein. She plans to complete advanced training in a procedural subspecialty and pursue an academic medicine career focused on implementation of AI into clinical cardiology. Her other passions include workout classes, karaoke and her cats, Mango and Peter.
