Fellow Spotlight: Evangelia Vemmou, MD

Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Evangelia (“Evi”) Vemmou, MD, earned her medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and completed her internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. As a research fellow at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, she helped study better treatments for patients with complex coronary artery disease. She and her colleagues found that stents that become clogged can be reopened with similar success rates as first-time stent placement, but there was a higher incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events within 12 months.
“I chose UCSF for fellowship because I was really impressed by the leadership’s effort to ensure a fantastic interview experience, and knew UCSF could guarantee outstanding clinical training while supporting my research goals,” said Dr. Vemmou. “I’ve been very impressed by faculty members’ devotion to patients, and have had long discussions with attendings after each cath lab case.” She plans to become an interventional cardiologist at an academic medical center – performing cardiac catheterization procedures, teaching, and conducting research. Her hobbies include running, cooking, taking Polaroid pictures, and exploring San Francisco with her husband, Ilias Nikolakopoulos, MD, also a first-year UCSF cardiology fellow.
