Fellow Spotlight: Bohao Liu, MD, PhD

Bohao Liu, MD, PhD, was born in Beijing and grew up in Macomb, Ill. He earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton University, conducting research in cancer biology, systems biology and signaling pathways. He earned his medical degree and PhD in cellular, molecular and biomedical studies at Columbia University, leveraging human induced pluripotent stem cells to create more accurate models of heart disease. “Once I saw human cardiomyocytes contracting under a microscope, it was hard to go back – it was so cool!” he recalled.
Dr. Liu completed his internal medicine residency at UCSF, and is delighted to stay for fellowship. “UCSF attracts good people, and the faculty and my co-fellows have been great teachers and so supportive,” he said. He looks forward to exploring different areas of cardiology, completing a postdoctoral research fellowship, and becoming a physician-scientist with his own lab focused on translational bench research. “I’ve always been a very curious person, and enjoy figuring out how to solve problems that no one has the answer to yet,” he said. His hobbies include ultimate frisbee and trail running with his wife, UCSF pediatric ICU fellow Lisa Grossman Liu, MD, PhD.
