Aducanumab: The Science and Politics Behind a New Drug for Alzheimer’s Disease

Dr. Gil Rabinovici, MDis the Edward Fein and Pearl Landrith Distinguished Professor in the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Departments of Neurology, Radiology & Biomedical Imaging. He received his BS degree from Stanford University and MD from Northwestern University Medical School. He completedGil Rabinovici, MD neurology residency (and chief residency) at UCSF and a behavioral neurology fellowship at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center. Dr. Rabinovici’s work investigates how structural, functional and molecular brain imaging techniques can be used to improve diagnostic accuracy in dementia and to study the biology of neurodegenerative diseases, with the goal of accelerating treatment development. He is Co-Director of the NIH-funded UCSF Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, study chair of the Imaging Dementia-Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS) and New IDEAS studies (~25,000 total participants) and PI on several national and local clinical, imaging and translational studies focused on AD and related disorders. Dr. Rabinovici’s research is supported by NIH, Alzheimer’s Association, American College of Radiology, Rainwater Charitable Foundation, Shenandoah Foundation and industry partners. Previous awards include the 2015 Christopher Clark Award in Amyloid Imaging, the 2012 American Academy of Neurology Research Award in Geriatric Neurology and the 2010 deLeon Prize from the Alzheimer’s Association.

Rita F. Redberg, MD, MSc, is a cardiologist and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco since 1990 and Core Faculty, Philip R Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies. After growing up inRita Redberg, MD, MSc Brooklyn, she graduated from Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. She got a Master’s degree at the London School of Economics as a University of Pennsylvania Thouron Fellow. Dr. Redberg is the Editor of JAMA Internal Medicine since 2009 and has spearheaded the journal’s focus on health care reform and “less is more”. Her research interests are in the area of health policy and technology assessment, and how to promote high value care as well as the need for inclusion of women in clinical trials.

Dr. Redberg served a 6 year term on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, which advises Congress on Medicare payment issues. She also served on the Medicare Evidence, Development and Coverage Advisory Committee from 2003-2006 and was reappointed as Chairwoman from 2012 - 2016.

She has given Congressional testimony multiple times related to regulatory issues. Dr. Redberg worked in the office of Senator Hatch and with the Senate Judiciary Committee on FDA-related matters during her tenure as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow. Dr. Redberg is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
